History
Ferris was founded in 1884 by Woodbridge and Helen Ferris as the privately-owned Big Rapids Industrial School. It became a state institution in 1950 and a state university in 1987. Since its beginning, Ferris has been dedicated to providing students of diverse backgrounds with educational opportunities for rewarding professional and civic lives.
Education
Some Ferris majors are offered at no other university in Michigan or the United States. More than 180 undergraduate and graduate majors include 2-year degrees that "ladder" into 4-year, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees, eight master's degrees and Doctorates of Education, Optometry and Pharmacy.
Research
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) will create an outstanding climate of support for Ferris State University faculty, staff and students, with emphasis on promoting the teacher-scholar model.
It is the mission of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs to enhance and facilitate the ability of faculty, staff, and students to develop and achieve their goals as teacher-scholars in research, education, and service delivery through successful competition for internal and external funding.
Career
As a University we are all about helping our students create a career. One way we do this is by the Career and Internship Fair that we host. This is an opportunity for employers to meet with our students and alumni and vice versa. This past Fall we hosted the largest recorded Fair to date. We had over 300 employers and over 1000 students attend.
At this event we have an emphasis on networking. Encouraging students to talk to employers and reach out to our alumni that attend. We work to strengthen and grow our relationships with the employers that attend. Hoping to have them come back to recruit our students and alumni at every fair.

Getting better
Things have gotten better over the past few years, compared to where they have used to be. Parking spots are close to enough, but sometimes not quite there. Food is alright. Wi-Fi is not nearly as bad as it was just two years ago. Financial Aid department is pretty good. The crowd on campus is a little on the rowdier side generally.

The guidance of these professionals has not only enhanced my academic journey but has also instilled practical skills crucial for my roles as a General English Teacher, accountant, and freight dispatcher. Ferghana State University, with its commitment to fostering global partnerships and offering real-world experiences, has played a pivotal role in shaping my comprehensive and well-rounded education.
Strong Teaching but Limited Practical Experience
At my university, I have had the chance to learn from excellent teachers, especially in the most important courses in my mechanical engineering program. The classes focus on theory, and the lessons are clear and detailed. But there are two problems. First, there is not enough practice to go with the theory, so it can be hard to understand how to use what we learn. Second, the schedule is very busy, leaving little time for extracurricular activities. Even on weekends and during breaks, it’s hard to find time for other activities. Despite these issues, the quality of teaching and the detailed courses make it a good experience overall.

Housing services
Ferris State University’s West Campus Apartments offer housing options for students and students with families.
West Campus Apartments offer several choices for single students with two, three, and four bedroom options, as well as choices for students with families including two and three bedroom family apartments. Residents of West Campus Apartments retain access to their residences throughout the time of their contract period. All of the buildings are positioned around the West Campus Community Center, creating a community environment perfect for meeting new people and interacting with fellow students. The Ferris shuttle comes to the community center with stops throughout campus.

ICT services

GeoBlue is the approved health insurance of Ferris State University and you are automatically enrolled in its plan. To opt out of this you must provide proof of a comparable policy. GeoBlue only covers you while you are in the United States.
