Overview
Because of the diversity of the various ethnic groups and cultures, the program will prepare social work students for contextually competent social work practice, inclusive of issues of culture, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, class and gender differences, religion and the effects of bias, prejudice and institutionalized racism.
These issues and concerns often obscure helping efforts if they are not appropriately recognized and dealt with in practice and in social policy development and implementation.
Thus, the program aims at increasing students’ understanding of the underlying causes resulting from intersecting effects of prejudice, discrimination, and stereotyping and teaches ways of identifying strategies and interventions for addressing these concerns and problems in social work practice.

General requirements
- The CSUDH MSW Program Admissions Committee welcomes applicants that can demonstrate high academic achievement and potential for professional social work practice.
- A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution is required. Applicants who are in the last phase of degree completion are eligible to apply. A liberal arts degree is preferred, but not required.
- Prerequisites
- To be completed with a “C” or better:
- (3) Social and/or Behavioral Science
- (2) Humanities
- (1) Human Lifespan Development or its equivalent
- (1) Elementary Statistics or its equivalent
- Personal statement
- Financial and time management statements
- Work experience details
- (3) academic and/or professional references
- GRE scores are strongly recommended if student’s GPA is below 3.0.
