Summary

This special programme to support young historians is aimed at young historians from Russia, the Ukraine, Moldavia and Belarus whose subject is the history of their own country.

Description

The Gerda Henkel Foundation was founded in Düsseldorf in 1976 as a foundation under private law. Its sole purpose is the promotion of science. It promotes the historic humanities, predominantly history, archaeology, history of art and historical sub-disciplines. The foundation's activities are not limited to Germany. Its initiatives are internationally oriented. This special programme to support young historians is aimed at young historians from Russia, the Ukraine, Moldavia and Belarus whose subject is the history of their own country.

Eligibility

Young historians whose subject is the history of their own country
  • Research scholarships for young historians to cover living expenses in their home countries (24 months maximum)
  • Short-term scholarships for young historians for visits to German Eastern Europe institutes, including travel expenses (for a maximum of six months)
  • Financing invitations for historians from the listed countries to German universities or research institutions, including travel expenses (for a maximum of three months)
  • Covering the costs of a lectureship for young German historians at universities in the listed countries, including travel expenses (for a maximum of two semesters)

Benefits

  • Monthly grant for doctoral candidates: 615.00 EUR
  • Monthly grant for postdocs: 770.00 EUR
  • Monthly grant for lecturers qualified to teach at professorial level with several years of experience in research and corresponding publications: 1,025.00 EUR
  • Travel allowance: as required
  • Material allowance: as required
  • For journeys to Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the grants are adapted to the usual rates of the awarding body's basic programme.

  • Description of research project (max. 8 pages)
  • Work plan and schedule
  • Overview of travel necessary for the research work and as detailed a list as possible of travel and material expenses expected to arise
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Declaration on sponsorship of the research project by other institutions or any applications made simultaneously elsewhere
  • Copies of certificates
  • Letter of recommendation from a lecturer at the applicant´s home university
  • Letter of recommendation from a lecturer outside the applicant's home country
  • Commitment from a German mentor to support the scholarship holder and provide him or her with a place at a German research institution (for stays in Germany)
Additionally, if applying for a lectureship:
  • Invitation from the university where the lectureship is to take place
