Description

The Gerda Henkel Foundation was founded in Düsseldorf in 1976 as a foundation under private law. Its sole purpose is the promotion of science. It promotes the historic humanities, predominantly history, archaeology, history of art and historical sub-disciplines. The foundation's activities are not limited to Germany. Its initiatives are internationally oriented. The Special Central Asia Programme was only set up in 2004. Its aim is to promote outstanding young scientists concentrating on the Central Asian region. Sponsorships may relate to concrete research projects of limited duration, doctorates, general research on this region, travel or research grants for securing assets in libraries and archives and also for emergency excavations.

Eligibility

Target Group

Particular consideration is given to scientists from the Central Asian region (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Northern Afghanistan, Southern Siberia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, China: only Tibet and Xinjiang provinces) in the subjects History, Historical Islamic Studies, Architecture and Art Studies. Sponsorships may be applied for in the following areas:

  • Concrete research projects of limited duration
  • Doctorate scholarships (max. 24 months)
  • Research scholarships (max. 24 months)
  • Smaller travel grants for scientists from the target region to allow them to participate in conferences and present their research projects
  • Research grants for securing assets in libraries and archives and for emergency excavations.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Benefits

  • Monthly grant for graduates: 200.00 EUR
  • Monthly grant for doctoral candidates: 250.00 EUR
  • Monthly grant for postdocs: 300.00 EUR
  • Monthly grant for lecturers qualified to teach at professorial level: 350.00 EUR
  • Travel allowance (within Central Asia, up to 2 weeks): as required
  • Standard monthly additional travel allowance (within Central Asia): 100.00 EUR
  • Transport allowance: as required
  • Material allowance: as required
  • For journeys to Western Europe, the grants are adapted to the usual rates of the awarding body's basic programme. For journeys to Eastern Europe, the rates specified by the "Special programme for promotion of young historians in Russia, the Ukraine, Moldavia and Belarus" are applicable.

  • Declaration regarding sponsorship of the research project by other institutions or applications made simultaneously elsewhere.

  • Letter of recommendation from a lecturer at the applicant´s home university
  • Letter of recommendation from a lecturer outside the applicant's home country
  • Commitment from a German mentor to support the scholarship holder and provide him or her with a place at a German research institution (for stays in Germany)
  • Proof of sufficient language proficiency (German or English).
