The Gerda Henkel Foundation was founded in Düsseldorf in 1976 as a foundation under private law. Its sole purpose is the promotion of science. It promotes the historic humanities, predominantly history, archaeology, history of art and historical sub-disciplines. The foundation's activities are not limited to Germany. Its initiatives are internationally oriented. The Special Central Asia Programme was only set up in 2004. Its aim is to promote outstanding young scientists concentrating on the Central Asian region. Sponsorships may relate to concrete research projects of limited duration, doctorates, general research on this region, travel or research grants for securing assets in libraries and archives and also for emergency excavations.
Target Group
Particular consideration is given to scientists from the Central Asian region (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Northern Afghanistan, Southern Siberia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, China: only Tibet and Xinjiang provinces) in the subjects History, Historical Islamic Studies, Architecture and Art Studies.
