The Gerda Henkel Foundation was founded in Düsseldorf in 1976 as a foundation under private law. Its sole purpose is the promotion of science. It promotes the historic humanities, predominantly history, archaeology, history of art and historical sub-disciplines. The foundation's activities are not limited to Germany. Its initiatives are internationally oriented. Not only are applicants required to have completed their degrees with above-average grades, but their dissertation must also promise a well above-average result. Successful applicants will receive full sponsorships for a maximum of two years. Approximately 15 young academics are sponsored every year.
The scholarship programme aims to sponsor highly qualified young academics. Only applicants who have shown themselves through their academic achievements and examination results to be extraordinarily talented and whose dissertations promise a well above-average result will be considered. Important criteria for selecting scholarship holders are the duration and history of applicants´ academic studies, final grades, age and special qualifications. Subjects: History, Archaeology, Prehistory and Early History, Art History, Historical Islamic Studies, History of Law
