Description

The Gerda Henkel Foundation was founded in Düsseldorf in 1976 as a foundation under private law. Its sole purpose is the promotion of science. It promotes the historic humanities, predominantly history, archaeology, history of art and historical sub-disciplines. The foundation's activities are not limited to Germany. Its initiatives are internationally oriented. Not only are applicants required to have completed their degrees with above-average grades, but their dissertation must also promise a well above-average result. Successful applicants will receive full sponsorships for a maximum of two years. Approximately 15 young academics are sponsored every year.

Eligibility

The scholarship programme aims to sponsor highly qualified young academics. Only applicants who have shown themselves through their academic achievements and examination results to be extraordinarily talented and whose dissertations promise a well above-average result will be considered. Important criteria for selecting scholarship holders are the duration and history of applicants´ academic studies, final grades, age and special qualifications. Subjects: History, Archaeology, Prehistory and Early History, Art History, Historical Islamic Studies, History of Law

Application Requirements

  • First of all an electronic application form must be filled in on the foundation´s website. After submitting the electronic application form, all other required documentation and a printout of the completed application form should be sent to the foundation by post.
  • Applications that remain incomplete or are oversized at the end of the application period cannot be considered in the selection procedure of the upcoming meeting. The same applies to applications for which letters of recommendation have not been received in time. Such applications will be deferred until the next meeting and the applicants informed accordingly.
  • Only applicants under 28 years of age when awarded their degree will be considered in the selection procedure. (Exceptions: The following can be deducted from the applicant´s age: Adult education, time spent raising children, military service, professional experience after gaining a degree and other special life circumstances).
  • The overall degree grade must be better than 2.0. (For degrees gained abroad, a separate evaluation will take place at the foundation´s offices to determine whether the applicant is included in the selection process.)
  • Applications and letters of recommendation may be submitted in German or English.

Duration

Max. two years

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

These must be sent by their authors directly to the foundation.

Application Deadline

Applications can be made at any time. The foundation boards make scholarship award decisions twice a year, usually in April and October.
