Description

The KAAD is the scholarship institution of the German Catholic Church. It supports students, young academics and university teachers from Eastern and South Eastern European countries, who submit a concrete study or research project and who can justify the necessity of a study visit to the Federal Republic of Germany. Particularly welcome are projects promising to aid in a multiplicative manner the processes of development and change, particularly in academic and ecclesiastical areas, as well as the democratization of the transformation countries.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Postgraduates/young academics, in particular: a) Doctoral candidates and candidates seeking a qualification as a university lecturer (habilitation) who have gained an honours degree after at least four years of academic study, are now working in their home country on a doctoral thesis to which they have been officially admitted (or fulfil the conditions to do so) and wish to pursue some of their research work in Germany; the degree must then be gained in their home country; b) Doctoral candidates admitted to a German higher education institution; c) Young researchers who wish to come to Germany for realisation/completion of commenced and ongoing own projects; d) Postgraduates having completed of a course of study of at least 4 years for further academic qualification by postgraduate, supplementary, additional or in-depth study courses lasting a maximum of 2.5 years (aim: German certificate; condition: admission); e) Medical practitioners with proven professional experience in the health service of their home country who seek further education (no medical specialisation!) and f) Graduates of higher education institutions for art who have been admitted to postgraduate courses in Germany after graduating with very good grades in their home country.
  2. University teachers/senior academics - professors, lecturers, chair holders who are invited to Germany for short research visits and specifically promote academic cooperation projects between higher education institutions in their home country and in Germany. ]
  3. Students who wish to study abroad, generally for 1 semester, after having completed their third year of an academic course of at least 4 years in their home country, and have hitherto achieved good grades and shown keen academic interest. It should serve above all to collect material for processing into a thesis for a final Magister, Diplom, Master's or other degree in the scholarship holder's home country, promote exchanges with German university teachers and familiarise the holder with the German higher education system. Recognition of the semesters studied at German higher education institutions for the degree course in the holder's home country should be ensured as far as possible. In exceptional cases, study visits lasting 2 semesters (10 months) may be granted if recognition of the German semesters is secured in advance.

In general, only postgraduates can be considered for sponsorship in the fields of Natural Science, Medicine, Music/Arts; admission of music students to artistic postgraduate courses or master classes in Germany is a prerequisite.

Application Requirements

A prerequisite is that scholarship holders return to their home country or another Eastern European country after their scholarship ends and take their final exams or gain their academic degree there if applicable. Otherwise the scholarship will be considered a loan and have to be repaid.

Duration

Postgraduate/young academics: up to 3 years; University teachers/senior academics - professors, lecturers, chair holders: up to 6 months; Students: 1 semester, in exceptional cases 2 semesters.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
