Description

Since 1996, The American Austrian Foundation and the Max Kade Foundation have been awarding 4th-year American and Austrian medical students from our partner medical schools one month clinical clerkships in Austria or the United States. The program aims to supplement the students´ education and broaden their experience by exposing them to a foreign culture and health care system.

Eligibility

For American students:

  • Rotating in Austria can be quite different from US rotations, as they are largely unstructured and requires fellows to take the initiative to communicate with doctors and residents.
  • Knowledge of German is a great need.

For Austrian students:

  • Students must fulfill each institution´s specific requirements.
  • Knowledge of fluent English is required.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test. More information

  • In the first week of their stay students are introduced to the Austrian Health Care System with a presentation.

  • In addition to the daily rotation in the hospital the clerkship offers a broad social event program, such as a visit to a typical Viennese "Heuriger".
  • Students also attend a weekly German class, which gives them the opportunity to learn and use a new language.
  • The travel grant and pocket money stipend is paid in two installments: 50% upon receipt of a confirmed itinerary and 50% upon receipt of the final report.
