Description

  • Year 1: Acquire a solid background for the doctoral work; set out the proposed research.
  • Years 2 and 3: Research, field work, data collection, writing of the thesis under close supervision.
  • Year 4: Writing up and preparation for the defence of the thesis. Part of the year may be used for professional or university traineeships or teaching opportunities

Eligibility

  • Good working knowledge of English,
  • Additional criteria varies per country.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Application information

  • Mid-October: Postgraduate recruitment begins,
  • 31 January: deadline for applications and references,
  • First week of March: Pre-selection Committee Meetings with the national grant authorities shortlist candidates to be invited for interview,
  • Early to mid-March: candidates are invited, by email, to attend interviews at the EUI. (NB: Candidates who don´t receive an invitation by this date, may assume that their application has been unsuccessful. They will, in due course, receive an e-mail from the EUI confirming this),
  • End of April: the EUI Admissions Committee meets to decide on the final admission and reserve lists.
  • May: During May, all the candidates who have attended an interview (admitted candidates, reserve candidates and unsuccessful interviewees) are informed of their result by e-mail.
  • June to August: Official admission letters are sent by e-mail. Practical information for selected candidates is posted on the Academic Service website. Reserve candidates may be contacted in this period if selected candidates withdraw.
  • End of August: Registration of New Researchers.
  • 1st September: Academic Year begins.

  • The selection process is competitive, only awarded to the best students of many qualified candidates.
  • It is legitimate to apply for several programmes - separate application forms have to be submitted for each application.
  • The presence of the chosen candidates on-site and the scientific pursuit of their projects / academic schedule are compulsory.
  • The chosen candidates are not allowed to engage in non-scientific gainful employment beside their studies.
  • Unless stated otherwise, the grants support one person only - they are not sufficient for accompanying family members.
  • The costs for medical care abroad in the EU are assumed by the respective national social security institutions. Bring along your European Health Insurance Card!
  • The applicant expressly agrees that in accordance with § 1 of the Austrian federal law on data protection BGBl.Nr. 165/1999, as amended, the personal data in the application can be passed on to the office in charge of the exchange programme, the partner institutions and other Austrian institutions granting financial support.
  • Upon application to the rector Austrian students will be exempted from paying the tuition fees if they pursue studies or internships in the framework of transnational, EU, national or university mobility programmes abroad.
