Description

The DAAD offers students and graduates from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Namibia, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, South Africa and Zimbabwe a grant for an approx. six-week "German Regional Studies Winter Course" in January/February each year.

These grants are awarded to enable students to attend German language and area studies courses that are offered by state (public) or state-recognised German higher education institutions and by affiliated language schools.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Applications are open to students in Bachelor´s and Master´s programmes of all subject areas who will have completed at least two academic years of studies at the time of starting their funded stay, as well as to doctoral students.
  • Graduates holding a Bachelor's degree are entitled to apply if a Master's programme will follow directly after the Bachelor´s degree. Please include the letter of confirmation by the higher education institution as proof.
  • Applicants must be nationals of one of the above-mentioned countries and must be registered at a university in the relevant country.
  • Applicants must present proof of good German language skills and must be able to follow lectures or presentations and to collaborate in teams. At the time of starting their funded stay, they must have completed at least 2 years of German langugare courses equal to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
  • The minimum age at the time of starting the funded stay is 18 years.
  • An applicant may only be considered once for a DAAD University Winter Course Grant in any three consecutive years.
  • Alternative requirements may apply for some few countries as specified in the "Country Information" section.

Duration

The courses last up to six weeks and are offered in the months of January and February.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test. More information

Benefits

The DAAD awards a part-cost grant of 975.- euros, a flat-rate course allowance of 750.- euros, plus a regionally graduated flat-rate travel allowance based on country of origin, see: www.daad.de/rkp-hsk_isk.

When completing the application form, applicants must specify which courses they wish to take (cf. the above-specified course locations). As far as possible, the DAAD will take these preferences into consideration when finally placing the awardholders; however, since the available places are limited, the DAAD reserves the right to choose an alternative course location.

Accommodation is booked via the course organiser.

  • Consideration can only be given to applications if they are received on time and are complete, and if they provide details on all the examinations taken and document these appropriately.
  • Please submit a single copy of the grant application.

  • Applicants must not send their application direct to the DAAD in Bonn.
  • Applications must be sent to DAAD in Bonn, Section 513, via a DAAD Regional Office or via a DAAD-(IC-)Lektor, or via a Consulate-General or Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, or via a DAAD partner organisation.
