Description

The Gerda Henkel Foundation was founded in Düsseldorf in 1976 as a foundation under private law. Its sole purpose is the promotion of science. It promotes the historic humanities, predominantly history, archaeology, history of art and historical sub-disciplines. The foundation's activities are not limited to Germany. Its initiatives are internationally oriented. Important decision-making criteria for awarding grants for research fellowships are the scientific significance and quality of the intended research project.

Doctorate holders may apply directly for research fellowships for larger research projects (or in the context of research projects). Subjects: History, Archaeology, Prehistory and Early History, History of Art, Historical Islamic Studies, History of Law

Application Requirements

The main decision-making criteria for awarding grants are the scientific importance and quality of a research project. Definitive statements on the cost structure and schedule of the suggested projects are mandatory.

Duration

Max. two years

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

  • Monthly basic scholarship amount: 2.000 euros
  • Childcare allowance (requires proof): · for one child 155.- euros · for two children 205.- euros · for three or more children 260.- euros
  • Monthly allowance for living abroad: 360,- euros

Application information

Application Papers

  • Application overview (application form can be downloaded from the website)
  • Description of the intended research project (max. 8 - 10 pages)
  • Schedule
  • Specification of necessary travel to archives, libraries and museums or other destinations required for drawing up the research paper, and a list of expenses thus incurred (for outward/return journey and accommodation, no flat daily allowances or hotel expenses)
  • Specification of material costs (e.g. photocopies or filming of archive materials, photographs, etc., no flat book allowance)
  • Curriculum vitae in table form with publications and academic certificates (examination, Magister, doctorate, qualification to teach at professorial level)
  • At least one specialised letter of recommendation from a university lecturer; the required letter of recommendation must be sent by its author directly to the foundation.

Application Deadline

Applications can be made at any time. The foundation boards make scholarship award decisions twice a year, usually in April and October.
