Eligibility

Applicants should hold British nationality OR have been fully resident and studying at Cambridge University for at least one year at the time of application.

General information

  • Applications from students with insufficient knowledge of German can only be accepted in special circumstances. Applicants must take the DAAD´s German language test (Einstüfungstest) with a DAAD Lektor or the Goethe-Institute in London. Only candidates who speak no German at all are exempt. For test dates please contact the Goethe institute directly, asking for the language department.
  • The language test is intended to indicate the level of proficiency in the German language and there is no specific pass mark. Only TestDaf certificates will be accepted as an alternative to this test.
  • The DAAD expects applicants to make their own contacts with the German institutions of higher education or research. Evidence of contact, if possible in the form of a provisional letter from a specific supervisor, should be submitted with the application forms.

Please note that applications cannot be considered from applicants for practical areas such as Music, Art, Film, Theatre etc. If you wish to apply for funding in these subject areas, please contact Lottie Bulman at the DAAD directly for details on scholarships in this field.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test. More information
