Description

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Open Society Institute (OSI) jointly run a scholarship programme for graduates and young lecturers from the countries of Southcaucasia and Central Asia and from Moldava and the Ukrainia. Scholarships are jointly awarded by the DAAD and OSI for study projects and doctorates carried out at German universities.

The DAAD/OSI programme aims to improve teaching and research in the humanities, sociology and social sciences in these countries and to create networks between academics from these regions as a basis for the independent development of further international contacts.

Eligibility

The DAAD/OSI scholarship programme preferentially supports humanities, sociology and social sciences disciplines which are underrepresented in the participating countries. These include political science, sociology, international relations, law, economics, public administration, education management, public health and philosophy. In individual cases, funding may be available for applicants from other disciplines as long as these count as humanities and social sciences subjects.

Doctorate (3 years)

  • Applicants must hold a second (graduate) academic degree, as a rule, the Magister/Master's. In individual cases, candidates may also be admitted who hold the Diplom Spezialista awarded after five years of study. In addition, applicants should already be in the first or second year of their doctoral programme (Aspirant status) or have the status of a Soiskatel. Their doctoral topic must be confirmed by the Academic Council at their university. When applying, all doctoral candidates must prove that they are already in contact with a possible German academic supervisor. Applications for German PhD programmes in the above-mentioned subject areas are also welcomed.
Research Grants (two three-month stays within two successive years)
  • Application is open to younger lecturers who already hold a doctorate (status: Kandidat nauk), are academically proven in their subject and are willing to take up new teaching and research content and are interested - beyond the programme - in networking with German academics.
  • Existing contacts with German academics or scientists must already be documented in the application.

Duration

The maximum scholarship term for a Master's or Magister programme is two years, three years for a doctoral programme, and a maximum of two three-month periods for research stays.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Benefits

The scholarship instalments are:
  • Scholarship instalments are dependent on academic level:
    for students in Master courses: 750.- euros per month,
    for doctoral students: 1.000.- euros per month,
    for scientists holding a doctorate: 1,840.- per month.
  • The programme pays the travel costs for all participants and, where necessary and planned, the costs for language courses.
  • Doctoral students receive a return trip home after the second year.
  • Master's and doctoral scholarship/grant holders with children who are not yet of school age and who remained in the home country, can have a home visit trip of 3 weeks max. funded each year.
  • The programme does not provide for the payment of family allowances or supplements for spouses or children.
  • A preparatory meeting is arranged for all participants as soon as the studies have begun in Germany. All participants in this programme each year one attend a mid-year conference jointly organised by the DAAD and the OSI as part of their training in Germany.
  • One tutor per group of 4 and more DAAD/OSI scholarship holders in a Master's or Magister programme is provided as a mentor.

Application information

Application papers
  • In principle, the usual conditions and application papers specified in the DAAD application form "Application for a Research Grant/Study Scholarship (Forschungs-/Studienstipendium)" apply to applicants for Master studies (a) and doctoral programmes (b): Curriculum vitae, research plan or statement of reason for the studies, proof of contact with a German university (only a), confirmation of academic supervision (only b), schedule (only b), two letters of recommendation from local professors or academic supervisors, certified copies of the school leaving certificate, of the Bachelor's or Magister (Master's) degree (Diplom spezialista) or, in the case of students in their fourth academic year, a certified copy of their study record book and a DAAD language certificate. The papers and documents for a Master's programme application should include the Admission to Studies application form required by the target degree programme and already completed by the applicant.
  • All copies of certificates and their translations must be officially certified. The health certificate need only be presented after the scholarship has been awarded.
  • Lecturers apply with the form "Research Stays/Working Visits (Forschungsaufenthalte/Arbeitsaufenthalte) by foreign university teachers and academics" (blue form) and the usual papers: Curriculum vitae, list of publications, study project, copy of the "Kandidat nauk" certificate and confirmation of academic supervision.
  • The above-mentioned application forms are available from the DAAD website (www.daad.de/en/form) or can be obtained from the diplomatic and consular missions of the Federal Republic of Germany and from the DAAD Information Centres.
