Description
The `Conflict Studies and Management Programme´ (CSMP) is a new programme implemented by the `Willy Brandt School of Public Policy´ in Erfurt (Brandt School) and the `German Academic Exchange Service´ (DAAD). It is addressed to Master´s students, doctoral students and senior researchers with an interest in conflict management in research and practise.
Eligibility
This special programme is intended for highly-qualified foreign Master´s and doctoral students as well as senior scientists.
Applications are open to candidates from countries in the Middle East, Central Asia, South
Asia, South East Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Duration
All fellowships will initially be awarded for a maximum of 12 months and can be extended
upon application.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test. More information
Benefits
Master Students:750 EUR (e.g. flat-rate travel allowance, health insurance, family
allowances, tuition waiver, six-month German language course)
Doctoral Students: 1000 EUR (e.g. flat-rate travel allowance, health insurance, family
allowances, tuition waiver, six-month German language course)
Senior Scientists: 1,8400 or 1,990 EUR, in exceptions 2,240 EUR (e.g. flat-rate travel allowance, health insurance, family allowances)
Application information
Master´s Students
At the time of their application, applicants for a CSMP Master´s scholarship must:
- Have completed their studies with a Bachelor´s degree or equivalent (excellent or very good) in one of the following areas: International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies/War Studies, International Law, Area Studies, Political Sciences with concentrations in conflict studies or conflict regions. Highly qualified applicants with different academic backgrounds who demonstrate at least two years practical experience in the field are also eligible.
- Have excellent knowledge of English; please provide evidence of this by submission of appropriate language certificates (e.g. TOEFL: 550/213/80); knowledge of German is advantageous, but not required.
- In general have completed their Bachelor´s degree in the last six years.
- Two years professional experience would be an asset.
- Applicants cannot be considered if they have been in Germany for more than one year at the time of application.
Application papers to be submitted include
- DAAD application form for research grants and study scholarships;
- Motivation Letter containing a precise description of the applicant´s academic / professional and personal reasons for wishing to participate in the programme;
- Full Curriculum Vitae including information about precise field of study and, if applicable, description of job experience;
- Recent language certificates giving evidence of the level of proficiency in English (TOEFL, IELTS) and if applicable in German. Please make sure to register in time for the respective tests. Fees for obtaining such certificates are considered as a personal career investment and will not be reimbursed.
- Two letters of recommendation by university professors and/or current or former employers;
- Officially authenticated copies of all certificates.
PhD Students
At the time of their application, applicants for a CSMP PhD scholarship must
- have completed their studies with a Master´s degree or equivalent (excellent or very good) in one of the following areas: International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies/War Studies, International Law, Area Studies or other relevant programmes with concentrations in conflict studies or conflict regions. Highly qualified applicants with different academic backgrounds who demonstrate at least two years practical experience in the field are also eligible.
- have an excellent knowledge of English; please provide evidence of this through the submission of appropriate language certificates (e.g. TOEFL: 550/213/80)7); a knowledge of German is advantageous, but not required.
- in general have completed their Master´s degree in the last six years.
- 2 years professional and / or research experience would be an asset.
- Applicants cannot be considered if they have been in Germany for more than one year at the time of application.

Further information about the papers to be submitted is listed on the application form which can also be obtained from the Internet (www.daad.de/en/form), from the diplomatic and consular representations of the Federal Republic of Germany or from the local DAAD lecturers, Offices or Information Centres.
The 2 completes set of application papers must be submitted by 15 August to the usual application address in your home country (in most cases the local DAAD or diplomatic representation).
Research Fellows
Prospective fellows should agree with the Willy Brandt School on the duration and timing of their stay in Erfurt. Preferred dates to commence are 1 April or 1 October.
Positions are open to highly qualified academics and scientists. At the time of their application, applicants for a CSMP Fellowship must
- be able to prove their research achievements in one or more of the following fields: political and social sciences with a strong focus on conflict studies and conflict management; regional security in Central Asia, South Asia or the Middle East; peacekeeping and peace building; conflict prevention in general; conflict resolution, post-conflict reconstruction; evolving issues of governance
- hold at least a doctorate/ Ph.D.,
- have proven research experience of at least 2 years in a relevant field and institution and be currently working in institutions of higher education or at a research institute.
- Non-academic professional experience in the field of conflict management would be an asset.
- Applicants cannot be considered if they have been in Germany for more than one year at the time of application.
