Description

Wingate Scholarships are awarded to individuals of great potential or proven excellence who need financial support to undertake creative or original work of intellectual, scientific, artistic, social or enviromental value and to outstanding musicians for advanced training. There is no upper age limit and the scholarship committee welcomes applications from mature candidates and those from non-traditional academic backgrounds. Previous Wingate Scholars are not eligible.

Funding is available for Post-Doctoral studies, fieldwork (associated with independent research, Post-Doctoral studies or completing a PhD). Funding is not available for Doctoral studies (except for costs to be met in or after the final year of a PhD). Please note this is a change from previous years - and means no awards for undertaking PhDs or DPhils as such, only for additional costs as set out above.

Awards are offered for independent research in most subjects, and aim to provide funding for multi-disciplinary projects that may not fall into any of the conventional funding categories.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, applicants must be:

  1. Resident and contactable in the United Kingdom during the period of application (from the date of applying to 1 July). Applications will only be accepted if submitted from a valid UK address. This applies to all candidates.
  2. Citizens of the United Kingdom, other Commonwealth or former Commonwealth country, Ireland or Israel, or
  3. Citizens of an EU or Council of Europe member country (see Useful Links) if they will have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years on 1 September
  4. 24 years of age or over on 1 September (there is no upper age limit)
  5. Able to provide evidence of real financial need

Duration

Up to three years

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test. More information

Benefits

The scholarships are designed to help with the costs of a specific project lasting up to three years. The maximum award for one year is £10,000, although the trustees are seldom able to provide this amount. To avoid disappointment, only individuals who can clearly demonstrate they meet the criteria should consider applying.

Application information

Scholarships are awarded through an annual application programme. The programme (for awards starting in September) will be open for online applications from 1st October to the deadline of 18:00 on 1st February.

The scheme criteria and guidance are reviewed each year and subject to change. Before starting an application, please read carefully through the Eligibility and Criteria page for information on this year's criteria, as well as the Guidance for Applicants notes below.

If you are eligible to apply you will need to download a copy of the Reference Request Form to send to two referees of your choice. Your referees should be asked to send their independent references to the Scholarships Administrator by the deadline of 1 February.

This year for applications we have introduced an online application process, which means that applicants need to complete and submit their applications through this page of our website. Applying online is very simple - just follow these steps:

For new applicants:

  1. Click on the link below called 'Application form'
  2. Then click on 'Application form for new applicants'
  3. Set up an Account Login - make sure you click on 'I am a new online applicant' and then fill in your email address and password
  4. You will receive a Welcome email with your Account Login details and the link to return to your form if needed. Keep this email for future reference.
  5. Complete the short Eligibility Quiz before you can access the form
  6. If you are eligible then complete the form - read the guidance notes on the first page before you start
  7. Attach supporting documents to the form if needed (see page 8 of form). If you are a music applicant send in CD by post
  8. Email copies of the Reference Request Form to two of your referees

Key Information

  1. Applications sent from overseas are not accepted and all applicants must be contactable in the UK during the period of application (from date of application to 1 July).
  2. Previous Wingate Scholarship holders cannot re-apply.
  3. Wingate awards are never given without personal interviews which take place in London throughout May each year, so applicants need to be available in person during that month. Interviews cannot be conducted by telephone.
  4. All applicants will receive either an invitation to interview or notification that they have been unsuccessful, by the end of April.
  5. Final decisions are made by the end of June/early July for awards which start the following September.
